Peacock Eye Sculpture – accepted for the V&A Inspired by… Exhibition 2014
I was immediately drawn to William Brown’s ‘Peacock Eye’ dress, inspired by his use of colour, form and texture to create an object that defies its functionality and appears to exist on two planes. It is both utilitarian and extraordinarily delicate.
Brown described the dress as combining Regency and Bauhaus styles. The two-dimensional quality of the garment is enhanced by flattened side seams.
This resonated deeply with my own desire to create a sculpture that is both 2-D and 3-D, an illusion of flat planes. A piece of work that is structural, hard edged and yet gives the appearance of softness that defies the materials used.
Brown is said to find his inspirations not from other fashion designers but from the forms that adorn our landscape – airports, department stores, industrial blocks and buildings that shape our environment. The essential focus of his designs is on functionalism, lack of ornamentation, purging of any superfluities.
However within this desire for simplicity he has manipulated his materials to produced a beautiful piece of art. If I owned this dress I would never wear it I would treat it like a piece of sculpture and merely gaze upon it.
